Lentil baby food?
30th-Apr-2009 12:16 pm
bounce
We have a couple bags of lentils that I have, ( dried) that I was thinking of cooking and making some of it into babyfood. Wyatt is 8 months. Any recipes that could introduce him to some good new flavors? We want to start trying new spices and flavors- we started with some cinnamon in the fruits. So far, he likes that. I just don't want him to be as picky as my daughter!
Other than plain pureed lentils... any ideas??

our baby loves this and we don't need to puree she loves fingering it up into her gummy jaws, lentils are a safe food as it would be an impressive feat to choke on them:)

excerpted (correct?) from Vegetarian Express Lane Cookbook by Sarah Fritschner

2tbsp vegetable oil; 1 medium onion, minced; 1 medium carrot, minced; 3 large garlic gloves, minced; 3 tbsp peeled, minced fresh ginger; 1 16ox package lentils (about 2 cups); 1/2 tsp salt, or more for taste, freshly ground pepper for taste; 5 cups h2o or veggie broth (i heart the veggie broth and i bet chicken broth would be tasty for omnivores).

heat oil over med. heat and add onions, carrot, ginger, garlic. cook until garlic and ginger are aromatic, 1 - 2 minutes. add lentils, salt, pepper, and broth or water. bring to a boil, then cover and reduce heat to low. cook 40 minutes, or until lentils are tender. season and serve.

* this makes a ton of food, she serves 6 generously, so freeze about half and munch on the rest for a few days *

Are onions ok at this age? ( 8mo) I could always omit them, but I am sure it would taste better with them!

mine did fine with them, these are cooked very well done and i think are there more for flavor, like the other ingredients. i have trouble with under cooked or worse yet uncooked onions, and this recipe is fine for me.

At that age I would just prepare the lentils with maybe a bit of minced onion and garlic, and add some curry powder. Absolutely no need to puree lentils!

Curry powder, that is a great idea!! I have some yellow curry around here somewhere, that I haven't even opened yet! Yum.

You've inspired me!
I made lentil soup tonight and am going to try it out on my 8 month old tomorrow. I put....
* lentils
* potatoes
* carrots
* garlic cloves
* Spanish virgin olive oil
* salt and pepper to taste
* green pepper
* as far as spices.... cumin, bay leaf, & oregano. (but very little of all three.)

I made this for the whole family (but with grilled salmon instead of canned) and everyone, baby included, loved it!
